Fostering and Volunteering:

Getting involved with with a Dane!

GDRNC welcomes applicants for foster care; it is our biggest volunteering need. We also welcome applicants for fundraising, event research and planning, transportation of Danes, clerical help, legal consultants, marketing, publishing, training, veterinary care and services, and other services you have to offer that you can think of that will benefit the Great Dane Rescue of Northern California.

Every effort helps these gentle giants survive to live a happy life. You don’t have to be a dog or Great Dane expert to help out. The only thing you need is a big heart and some time. If you can spare just a little time here and there you can make a difference.  Our lives are busy and volunteer commitments can be as little or as much time as you choose to give. If you can dedicate only one hour a week, we can find you a task that suits your schedule. You can volunteer from home or come out and work with the dogs!

We need foster homes for our Danes! Our greatest need is a steady supply of quality loving foster care homes for our Danes.

Almost every day we get a phone call to asking us to take in a Dane.  Some of these gentle giants have only days to live and need our help and your home desperately. The more foster homes we have the more Danes we can save. Don’t discount fostering; it can be an emotionally challenging yet highly rewarding experience. Your job is to befriend the Dane, train the Dane to peacefully coexist in a home, evaluate the Dane, and most important be patient and love the Dane.

Fostering is a big commitment and we ask that once a Dane is placed in a foster home that you keep that Dane until it is placed in its forever home.  If at any time you feel things are not working out for you and the Dane you can notify us immediately and we will try to locate a new foster care home for it.

If you are at all interested in the possibility of fostering a Dane please contact us.  You are not obligated in any way after filling out application forms and we will be in touch with you for a phone interview and make to arrangements for an onsite home visit.

Home visits are performed for all prospective adopting individuals or families and occasionally in between foster dogs. Each foster home must meet certain required elements to ensure a safe and successful placement and ultimately an adoption. The home inspection doesn’t take long and it gives us a chance to get to know you better and find out what type of Dane personality will best be suited in your home. You meet new people who are very interested in Great Danes and you make new friends through this process. We may have our volunteer bring a Dane to your home with them and it is not mandatory that you own a Great Dane to foster one.  If you do own a Dane, or another dog, we try to place a foster Dane that will be compatible with your existing Dane and or other household animals.
